Sciatica refers to pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve, which branches from your lower back through your hips and buttocks and down each leg. It typically affects only one side of your body.

Causes of Sciatica

Sciatica is a symptom, not a condition itself. It’s usually caused by:

Herniated disc (most common)

Spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spine)

Degenerative disc disease

Spondylolisthesis

Piriformis syndrome

Trauma or injury

Tumors or infections (rare)

Symptoms

● Sharp, burning, or shooting pain in the lower back, buttock, and down one leg

● Numbness or tingling in the leg or foot

● Muscle weakness in the affected leg

● Pain worsens with movement, coughing, or sitting for long periods

Diagnosis

Medical/Chiropractic history and physical exam

Imaging tests: MRI, CT scan, or X-rays to identify underlying causes

Treatment Options

Conservative (First-Line)

Rest (briefly – avoid long bed rest)

Chiropractic and exercise

● Non-Spinal Decompression

Hot/cold compresses

Alternative options

Epidural steroid injections

Surgery (for severe or persistent cases – e.g., microdiscectomy)

Acupuncture

Yoga/stretching routines for sciatic nerve relief

When to See a Chiropractor

Seek immediate care if:

● Pain is sudden and severe

● There’s loss of bowel/bladder control

● Significant weakness or numbness in the leg
